Order fish from vendor (Anderson Farms, golden shiners) with copy of fish permit
Move sponge filters from tanks where new fish are going into old tanks with pre-existing fish. This saves bacteria colonies to start up after medicating incoming fish
Install air stones in place of sponge filters
Turn off UV filters
Check water parameters and perform water change if needed
Coordinate with animal facility and receiving to receive fish delivery as soon as possible
Prepare empty 20-gallon tank to put bagged fish in
Prepare ice bath for euthanization of sick fish
Receive fish delivery
Slowly acclimate fish to room temperature using storage or tank water
Euthanize sick fish in ice bath. All fish will be anesthetized by rapid chilling. Fish will be submerged in an ice water bath (5 parts ice to 1 part water; the water temperature will be monitored with a thermometer and maintained between 1-4 degrees C) for at least 10 minutes after cessation of opercular (i.e., gill) movement. The fish should not come in direct contact with the ice. The density of fish should be no more than 40 fish per liter of ice water. Carcasses will be incinerated with other vivarium waste. For the euthanasia of sick fish, the euthanasia container will be sterilized before putting the container back into use. Ice is received from Siegfried/McCusker Lab (ISC 5500)
Distribute fish into new tanks
Medicate tanks using medication trio: FRITZ Maracyn (1 scoop per 10 gallons), FRITZ Paracleanse (1 scoop per 10 gallons), NoParaIch (1 capful per 10 gallons)
